The Helvetii were a confederation of Celtic tribes. They originated in what is now Germany, and also inhabited what is now the Swiss plateau during the time of conflict with the Roman Republic in the first century BC. They feature prominently in Caesar's
Commentarii de Bello Gallico, or
Commentaries on the Gallic War. Caesar stated that the Helvetii were divided into four subgroups, which he called
pagi. Caesar speaks of the Helvetii in Book 1, chapters 2-29 of his commentary.
