Tiber Island is 1,100 feet long and 330 feet wide at its widest. It has been a place of healing since the Temple of Aesculapius was erected after the plague 0f 291 BC. Tiber Island is located east of Capitoline Hill (See post on Capitoline Hill), opposite the Circus Flaminius and Forum Holitorium. A statue was sent for after the plague, but a serpent was brought back instead. The serpent abandoned the ship and swam to the island. This was seen as a good sign, so the island was decorated to resemble a ship.
